Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is commonly used in major events or gatherings, such as conferences, summits, forums, and congresses, when a large audience must communicate in multiple languages. The United Nations is a notable example of this form of interpretation, since many attendees use headphones to hear the interpretation in their preferred language. The interpreter speaks into the listeners’ headphones while seated in a soundproof room outfitted with a headset.

This kind of translation puts a lot of pressure on the translator since they have to be able to translate from one language to another and communicate the meaning to the audience while listening to the speech in real time. Since the task is so difficult, simultaneous interpreters typically operate in pairs to ensure a seamless operation. These are referred to as “the acme of skill” in interpreting.

Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is when the speaker stops at the conclusion of a complete thought to give the interpreter time to speak and provide the identical speech in the target language. This form of translation is appropriate for events as ceremonial events, seminars, negotiations, technical meetings, press conferences, trainings, lectures, business meetings, and court hearings, etc. One advantage of consecutive interpreting is that no extra equipment is required. Typically, the translator sits or stands immediately next to the speaker or listeners and translates the entire text into the target language, paragraph by paragraph.
